The title of this article is "It's not about socialism, it's about rescuing capitalism" and it was written by Harold Meyerson from the Washington Post. It was published on March 4, 2009.
This article was directed toward the audience of whom oppose socialism. It was directed this way because it was trying to get across that socialism isn't all that bad, it's just a different way to run things. And with the economy the way it is right now this country could definitely use a change. The article also talks about if Obama achieves all his changing goals for the country then there will be a more reliable capitalism and that will be helpful.
All in all this aritcle is trying to make the point that socialism has worked in the past and will work now. But personally right now im not interested in how we get out of a "slump" just that we do manage to get out.

This appeared in the Washington Post and was written by Harold Meyerson. The title of the article is, It's not about socialism, it's about rescuing capitalism.
The article explains how socialism worked in the past and how it has the possibility to work now. This could be a possible good change for our nation. the article goes on to explain that if Obama's agenda is achievedthen there will be a sustainable capitalism that will help our country out. Not only wil the capitalism be sustainable but it will also be competitive and more social. I honestly do not care how we get America out of the rut it is in, as long as we are able o get out by doing ethical things. If america were to ever use unethical ways to get out of this economic crisis then its no better with money than it was without money.

The author of this particular article is Harold Meyerson. The article appeared in the Washington Post, in the Opinion section. The title of the article is, "It's not about socialism, it's about rescuing capitalism." It was published on March 4th, 2009.
It was written to inform every one that socialism is not bad, but a new way to run America. Our old system is not working that well, look at what is going on today. It is arguing that Obama is trying to help in new in ways that we are used too. But that is exactly what we need right now. A change of pace, and new beginning. I put all my faith in Obama, I feel he is going to try and help Americas help with all his power.
The audience it is directed towards is those who oppose socialism. The author just wants to prove that it can and has worked in the past. He also points out other countries that have failed that have the same system as we do now. These include Germany and many other European countries.

Paul Krugman, with The New York Times, wrote the article Revenge of Glut! I agree with Krugman's stance on how we all ended up in this horrid mess.
I just do not understand how long everyone involved really thought they could get away with this. Or maybe they knew it would catch up with them, just not this soon.
Can all the blame really be put off on the bankers and investers though? I think not. It is time for the american people to step up and own responsibilty for their own mistakes. You should know if you only make $10.00 per hour you can not afford a $200,000 home! Wake up, just because the bank is willing to LOAN you the money does not mean you can afford to PAY IT BACK! Yes people a loan is when you borrow money to pay back.
Everytime I go out to eat the places are packed out. You still have to wait to be seated at Olive Garden during lunch throughout the week. Things will turn around, when and only when, the american people realize how serious this thing really is!

The article titled "Revenge Of The Glut" by Paul Krugman of the New York Times basically describes how the world attained its current terrible economic situation. Mr. Krugman describes how the Chairman of America's Federal Reserve Bank kind of foreshadowed troubling economic times a few years ago. The author then goes into great wordy detail describing exactly what took place around the world that got countries economically where they are now. Pretty much it rests fault on deregulation and very risky investment moves that shattered into nothing but great losses. Very very bad. I enjoyed the article that was aimed toward anyone wanting to gain a better understanding of the worlds economic crises. I had yet to learn of Asia's involvement in this whole ordeal and found that alone to be very interesting. I have thought this whole thing rested soley on America's shoulders. Thanks for shedding light on this and revealing I was wrong for assuming so. That's what you get when you assume. This article will be forwarded to friends of mine.

Revenge of the Glut was published in the New York Times by author Paul Krugman. This article os for all Americans wondering about the financial crisis that we are in. In this article Krugman talks about the reasons we are having the economic crisis we are. He states that sub-prime lending wasn't the only cause. We are living in a world of troubled borrowers. Another problem is the trade deficit with Asis. Our problems range from the housing market, automobile market, and all other manufactured goods. It is hard to get people back spending in our economy because no one can gaurantee that they will have a job tommorrow. Krugman goes on to say how we are going to be in this mess for a while. Hopefully creditors and banks can get thier acts together and stop lending money to those who are not capable of making the payments. It is terrible to think that so many people have lost everything because our financial market was greedy and was trying to make a dollar. This problem is not only affecting the United States but countries all over our world.

Revenge of the Glut is an article That appears in the New York Times authored by Paul Krugman, a columnist for the New York Times.Krugman seeks to inform the American public as to the other causes besides sub-prime lending that has caused the latest world-wide recession.Krugman argues that trade deficits with Asia by the U.S and other countries are factors in this global meltdown.
Krugman argues that the borrowed money from Asia along with the increase in housing values help created the illusion of wealth. So when sub-prime mortgages began to fail causing the housing bubble to burst. The result was a lost of wealth leaving only huge sums of debt to be paid from borrowing. Consequently, the results of these actions caused a recession in the domestic and global economy effecting industries such as manufacturing. Krugman concludes that we are in a economic mess. Borrowing, a belief in deregulation of capital markets, and the illusion that housing values would only increase is the reason for our calamity. However, the worse is not over. The problem is further compounded by the overall lack of confidence in the economy resulting in the lack of consumer spending, the lack of banks willing to lend, and the lack of business willing to invest. Who knows if of or when we will get out this mess.

Revenge of the Glut is the name of the article that appeared in the New York Times. The article was written by Paul Krugman and was directed towrd anyont who is aware of the financial crisis the world is in. The article goes on to explain how one day a nation can be on top of the world (in financial terms) but within a few years everything can change. In this article it explains that it was a number of things that caused our national debt, not just bad home loans and subprime lending. The article also says that what we thought were crisises back in the day are nothing compared to what we are going through today. America has a huge trade deficit with the economies of Asia. This deficit does not help out the debt situation of America. America has dug itself into a deep hole that is going to take a while to get out of and there is no definite way to get out of it.
Assignment # 6 A.Huddleston
The article "Revenge of the Glut" was published on March 1, 2009 in the New York Times. The author Paul Krugman is an opinion columnist for the New York Times. This article talks about what might have led our economy into a downward spiral it is in now. Mr. Krugman is an American economist and professor of economics and international affairs. Krugman is a recent winner of the Nobel Prize in Economic Science for his take on trade patterns and economic activity. So Mr. Krugman is no stranger to watching the economy, and is educated enough in this subject to make his opinion valid.
Krugman helped predicted; before the crisis happened; that the housing market was going to soon fall. He predicted that it would soon fall to 25% over all and 50% in high populated areas like Miami and Los Angeles. He also blamed the economic fall on two people and they would be Greenspan and Gramm. As Krugman thinks that the housing market was a part of the economic downfall; it was not the only thing. There were several things that got rolled into a ball causing the downhill snowball effect.
Home loans, interest rates, borrowers of money, the account deficit, US currency rate, plus more problems helped our economy be thrown out of whack. In turn the whole world's economy has seen a huge drop. The greed of many people on the political level and else where also did not help our economy. Bankers, Wall Street investors, and many other trading company investors are now having to reap what they have sown. Also, large capital flows ended up flowing into the Untied States placing all the burden on us. It was almost as a tornado came down and hit our economy; causing a catastrophic mess.
If you ask me it was bound to happen almost putting the saying to use. That history repeats itself. Mr. Krugman is trying to inform everyone on how this happened, and argue that we should have seen this coming. I mean how could we have not seen this coming. People buying houses they could not afford, and banks deceiving them into thinking they could. Credit card companies giving credit to those who have already has bad credit. Also the federal government bailing out companies like Bear Stearns in an already overloaded deficit. This then obligated the federal government to help other failing companies; thus making other companies cry wolf. There were several things the government could have done to help stop this but were obviously blinded by other things that seemed more important than this. So now thanks to greed and other things us as Americans now have to face huge inflation, joblessness, and homelessness. Even though we are in a resection if something is not done soon then we are going to slip back into history and go back into another depression.

The article “Revenge of the Glut” was written by Paul Krugman of the The New York Times and was published on March 1st, 2009. Paul Krugman has a B.A. from Yale University in 1974 and his Ph.D. from MIT in 1977. He has taught at Yale, MIT and Stanford. At MIT he became the Ford International Professor of Economics. He has been writing for the New York Times since 1990.
The purpose for the article was for anyone interested in knowing why the United States is in a hole and why economics works and anyone that doesn’t understand how it works and how we got in this glut. It also describes how many European markets have failed, such as the Iceland, Ireland, and Estonia. For awhile these three were on top of there game with the inrush of capital money that created the illusion of wealth and in the last two to three years the capital bubble has burst. Recently this year Iceland went bankrupt. Also talk about the Asian financial crisis of 1997-98 which back then, twelve years ago seemed like a big deal at the time but no it looks like nothing compared to the crisis now. The other thing it describes is how our money is spread all over the world and now we must get it back somehow. But the basic point of this article is how the United States got into the financial mess it’s in right now. But in the end I believe our country can prevail from this crisis. It was an interesting article the read about.

Assignment # 6 M. Gardner
On March 1st, 2009, in the Opinion section of the New York Times, the article Revenge of the Glut was published. The article was written by Paul Krugman. Krugman has taught at widely known schools such as Yale, MIT and Stanford. Krugman has received degrees from Yale and MIT.
As more time passes on people are asking more about how America got into such a bad situation. This article helps explain how the economy got into the situation it is in. Another topic in the article is how the economy works. In the beginning of the article it explains how the house loans were only a small problem to start with but along with other problems have lead to debt crisis. Into the article Krugman explains how a speech four years ago by Ben Bernanke can be linked to America today. Ben Bernanke is the Federal Reserve chairman. Mr. Bernanke cited “the depth and sophistication of the country’s financial markets (which, among other things, have allowed households easy access to housing wealth).” Krugman explains in the article that this was the revenge of glut.
America has put a good bit of money into other countries but little flow of money is being returned into America. America was more focused on money going to other countries it was too late by the time America realized there was not enough coming back. America bankers ran the world by finding certain ways to enrich themselves. By enriching themselves they were hiding risk and fooling investors. Assets prices were rising, and money was strong and everything was looking fine. Until those investors knew things were wrong but continued till it was kind of too late. As the author states “bubbles always burst sooner or later.” Those asset prices that was rising vanished leaving nothing but debt and a crisis. It’s not like America has only had a crisis like this many countries have. Like any person goes through a rough time so do countries. If Asia made it through a rough time for a year then America should be able to. It’s not understood how much time America needs but the author makes a point we can do it like others. At the end of the article the author states “global paradox of thrift: around the world, desired saving exceeds the amount businesses are willing to invest.” The result in this glut is the global slump American and some other countries are in.
The audience of this article is geared toward anyone who cares and wants to understand why America is in this glut. As stated before this article was in the Opinion section of the New York Times. Krugman wrote this article to express his feelings toward American and the global slump it is in. Krugman also wrote this article to help people understand his feelings and the global slump of America. The overall argument of the article is that America is not the only countries to be in a slump and how it happens and how countries can get out the global slump.

The article, Revenge of the Glut, was written by Paul Krugman. This article was published on March 1st, 2009, in the New York times. Krugman received his degrees from Yale and MIT and later went on to teach at those fine universities. He started writing for the New York times in 1990.
The audience for this article is people who don't know much or anything at all about the economy. Therefore, this article is mostly about the economy and how it works. Krugman talks about how every economy rises and falls and that people just have to adapt to the changes.
He talks about how this is the revenge of the glut and there are money issues with America and other countries. I feel that we are America and we can get through anything. Other countries have been through this situation and came out okay, so I have faith that we will too. We just have to figure out how to get our money back. All in all this was a great article and it taught me a few things.

In the article “Will: The continuing fall of federalism”, by George F. Will that appeared in The State newspaper was write about the decline of Federalism in the process of electing Senatorial replacements do to the proposal of a new amendment to the Constitution. Russ Feingold (Senator form Wisconsin) with the help from John McCain (Senator form Arizona) wants to amend the 17th Amendment of the Constitution, so that vacant Senate seats are filled by a state election instead of being filled by Governor appointment. Mr. Will’s opinion is that this amendment will effect how the Senate operates. The Senate was designed like the House of Lord to discus and debate the rushed actions of the House of Commands which would be our House of Representatives.
Before the people were give the power to elect Senators they were elected by the Legislature of the States. Which produced some of the most influential Senators in our Country’s history, because the people who where elect were experienced and they knew and understood the Constitution. The process of State elections takes away some of the over lapping Federal and State powers away that were put in the Constitution to be checks and balances. But do to the controversy around the appointment of Senator Burris who filled the seat vacated by Barack Obama, and the Governor of Illinois wanting to sale the seat “because it is golden”. Gives Feingold support in passing the Amendment by say he wants to stop the Senate from being corrupted and it also gives the people the right to vote for their temporary Senate replacement until an official election is held.

George F. Will from the Washington post was the author of the article Will: The continuing fall of federalism. This article was posted on Sunday February 22, 2009 on the South Carolina’s home page. South Carolinas home page is www.state.com. The article is writing about the 17th amendment and how some want to keep the amendment and some want to amend it. The simplest understanding of the 17th amendment is about the states and how they select their legislature.
Senator Russ Feingold does not want the governors to fill senate vacancies but rather by voters. Many reasons can come up for a senate seat to be filled. However, in the case where President Obama’s seat was up for sell shows that something should be done. This day in time people need to worry about more important things then selling a seat knowing its wrong and they are going to get into trouble. You hear about all the abusing of powers while in the senate but there are some good things going on. Every state should be able to pick their senate for many reasons. Letting states pick the senate will help will the same party always getting in the senate. The states and local governments do some much on their own why not add this?
I believe the states can not have enough power. The federal government needs to realize that things to need change now! Look where some Americans are now. Overall, the author is trying to make sure Americans understand what the whole deal is with the 17th Amendment. The author is just showing a point in how no matter what happens there will never be total agreement between states, government, and parties.

The article entitled, Revenge of the Glut, was written by Paul Krugman. He began writing for the New York Times in 1990. He taught at school such as Yale, MIT, and Stanford. Along with receiving his degrees from Yale and MIT. This article was published on March 1st, 2009, in the New York Times, in the Opinion sections of the paper.
This article was written to inform people of how the economy works. The audience is directed to those who do not know much about how economics works. The basic argument of the author is that every economy goes up and down. They just have to adapt.
In this article the author says that this was the revenge of glut. That America got a lot of extra money form other countries from capital inflows. It is just natural that since most countries stopped exporting things that it would hurt us. We as a nation just need to tough it out. It will last at least another year, but I feel that if Asia got through it in 1997-1998 then we can do it. The money has just spread out to too many other countries we need to find a way to get it back to our country. It has happened to every country that has a big boom, you just loose the edge some how some way. When you have a lot of money coming in you have to re-budget to keep things running smoothly. Then when you loose money, you have to re-budget yet again to keep things running smoothly. It was a very well written article, and I found it very interesting to read.

Assignment #5 T Hickam
Well my first thought of this essay is, what is this stuff all about? To me all that the is all about politicians wanting to change the constitution …again! So the source seems to come from the Washington Post. The audience is anyone who doesn’t want to see empty senate seats be replaced by those who where not elected. Personally I think every one should hear about this its informative and every one need to know what is happening to their senators‘. Who wouldn’t want to know that the people you voted for might leave , and be replaced by people you don’t want.
This seemed to appear in the Washington Post , not to mention the website we read it from, http://www.thestate.com/editorial-columns/v-print/story/692551.html;
The main point seems to be very clear. The essay informs us, the readers, that the folks in the senate are trying to change the 17th amendment. Now I understand what Wisconsin is doing and I like it we should have the right to pick replacement senators. It’s just fair that every one should have a chance to vote for their senator.
The audience that this essay is directed toward are people like us who attend classes like this one, but that’s not all. It is for those people who want to stop the changes happening in the constitution. Thou I could be wrong . The argument is about why should we let the senators change the constitution to benefit them

The audience that this essay is directed toward are people like us who attend classes like this one, but that’s not all. It is for those people who want to stop the changes happening in the constitution. Thou I could be wrong . The argument is about why should we let the senators change the constitution to benefit them

The article entitled: Will: The continuing fall of federalism was written by George F. Will of the Washington Post. The above mentioned item first appeared in The State on February 22, 2009.
The article was written to inform American voters about how Senator Russ Feingold wants senate vacancies to be filled by voters rather than by governors. I cant say I support the Feingold amendment 100% but why not put the power back into the hands of the people. Lets be honest, those appointed to the senate by governors are not appointed because of what they know but rather for who they know. In all likelyhood Rob Blagojevich is not the first governor to benefit or profit from a vacant senate seat. And we really can do without anymore Kennedy's coming out and whining about a sense of entitlement.

In the article Will:The continuing fall of federalism, George Will targets the voting population. This article was published February 22, 2009 in the Washington Post. This article is about the 17th amendment and whether we should keep it the same or amend it. The 17th amendment is about who should elect the legislature, the state or the people. Because not all of governors make the best decisions some think it should be up to the people that they represent. Of course the states want to make these decisions so they can have the power. I think that the people should elect our senators. They are supposed to represent us and if we vote on them they will. It is a shame that a Governor would sell a senate seat to the highest bidder. This just shows what our government is all about. Not to say they are all bad but we look to them to run our country and they are trying to make a quick dollar. Instead of worrying about the 17th amendment I think we should worry whether we will have a job tomorrow or whether will we eat.

The article, Will: The continuing fall of federalism appeared in the Washington Post and was written by George F. Will. The target audience of this article was Senator Russ Feingold/liberals...and the people who follow state government very closely.
This aricle states that Sen. Feingold wants the people to have the power to elect a candidate to take the place of a vacated senate seat in a case similar to Baraq Obama. The 17th admendment states that the governor has the power to elect a person to take over the senate seat. In the past election of Baraq Obama, there was some illegal acts that went down that caused the Illinois governor to be impeached. The governor was going to sell the vacated seat to the highest bidder and that's not ethical at all. So Sen. Feingold wants to change the 17th amendment to allow the people to have the power to decide.

Assignment # 5 A. Huddleston
The State.com posted the Will: The Continuing Fall of Federalism article on Sunday February 22, 2009. The author of the article is George F. Will of the Washington Post. The article is on the 17th amendment and how some senators are making a huge fuss over it. Some of the senators are wanting to amend the 17th amendment and the other senators feel that it is "vandalism' against the document; and it should be left alone.
The 17th amendment deals with the states and now they select their legislature. The great divide in the senate is whether or not the state's should be allowed to select their own legislature. Others feel that it should be up to the people of that state to vote on the legislature. Some states feel that when a senate seat opens up due to things like retiring, controversy, or death the state should select the next senator. This is because some governors have not made the best choices at times for the seat. An example of these bad choices would refer to the Blagojevich and Burris trial. This is when President Obama's seat was up for sell in the senate. Also, some of the senate have been abusing their powers while in office.
The people should be allowed to vote for their own legislature. As a country that has some democracy picking the people to run the state should be left up to those who live in that state. Governors picking the legislature can sometimes be a bad thing, because if house has a favor to a party then that party would get picked. Then the same old policies would stay in place and the state would not benefit. Some people are for opposing the re amend of the 17th amendment because they do not want to give any more power to the state and local government. The federal government is afraid that if they give the power to the states then the government would not go the way they wanted to. The author wanted to let the general public know of the dilemma that goes through the senate. He wanted to show that no matter what our government will never agree, and that their will always be that divide between the parties, federal government, and state government.

On Sunday February 22th, 2009, George F. Will of the Washington Post posted the article “Will: The continuing fall of federalism.” The article was also published in The State. George was born May 1941 and is a Pulitzer Prize winner; and is a newspaper columnist, journalist, and author.
The argument is dealing with the election process that Sen. Russ Feingold of Wisconsin is opposed of the 17th amendment, which states. “The Senate of the United States shall be composed of two Senators from each State, elected by the people thereof, for six years; and each Senator shall have one vote. The electors in each State shall have the qualifications requisite for electors of the most numerous branch of the State legislatures. When vacancies happen in the representation of any State in the Senate, the executive authority of each State shall issue writs of election to fill such vacancies: Provided, That the legislature of any State may empower the executive thereof to make temporary appointments until the people fill the vacancies by election as the legislature may direct.” This amendment was enacted April 8, 1913. The McCain-Feingold amendment requiring elections to fill Senate vacancies will owe any traction it gains to Senate Democrats’ opposition to an election to choose a replacement for the president, which is now Barrack Obama. This amendment would further more reduce power from a state governor in appointed vaccines in the senate. It also would require senators to be elected once every two years instead of every six years as well.
To concluded, I don’t agree with the McCain-Feingold amendment due to the fact it was apart of the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act of 2002. That’s the main reason why I don’t agree with it. The other is it makes power directed towards one central body Washington in choosing state senators, which I don’t believe in. States should be allowed to choose their own senators, not Washington.

“Will: The continuing fall of federalism” by George F. Will, with the Washington Post was posted on Feb. 22, 2009. George is trying to reach the voting audience, an audience who cares about politics.
He wants to make people aware that Sen. Russ Feingold is trying to amend the 17th amendment, making it where the people will have the vote of who they elect for Senate office.
I do agree that the people should have a larger role in choosing the people for this position. However, I feel that 6 years is a sufficient amount of time to hold this position. When you switch these roles to often nothing gets accomplished. You just have a bunch of newly elected trying to undo the previously elected decisions.

In the article "States and Cities in Scramble for Stimulus Cash," was written by Monica Davey. It was published in the New York Times. This article was directed to people who are concerned about how the federal government and how they give money to states.
After reading this article it makes me wonder exactly what the government uses all this money for. They do all these big projects, like building new buildings and building cities or bridges when really they could be using that money for a better cause. Yes the economy is growing but at the moment its not so good and I personally think that the government needs to think a little harder about how they spend their money.

In the artice "Will: The continuing fall of federalism" was written by George F. Will who is a writer for the Washington Post. He published this article in the State newpaper. Will is a pulitizer winner.
This article was written to inform people about the Constitution and how people want it to be changed. McCain-Feingold wants the Senate election process to be changed. Also, people want to learn more about the 17th amendment so they can figure out some changes to deal with that.
The main point of this article to reach out to people to get more involved with politics and the constitution. The more people that get involved, the more opinions they get and the better they can make the constitution for everybody. They also want people to get involved with the elections rather than the legislatures.
With more people involved it will cause the states more in control, rather than the federal government if people arent involved. McCain-Feingold's idea purposes that the federal government to be more in control and taking power from the states.
I dont agree with this because the states should be able to have a fair amount of control over the necessary stuff.

Will: The Continuing Fall Of Federalism is an article authored by George Will. this article appears in the Washington Post. Will argues against the Constitution amendment introduced by the democratic senator from Wisconsin, Russ Finegold.
Will opposes the proposed amendment believing that this is another liberal assault on federalism. The adoption of this amendment would reduce the power of the states ceding more powers to the national government. Will claims that states were already weaken by the 17 amendment to the Constitution. That amendment removed power from the state legislators to the general electorate to select and elect members of the Senate. Will points out that the reduction of the states powers is not in-keeping with our political tradition of separation of powers and with the wishes of the frames of the constitution. The framers established the Senate to be a deliberative body insuring and protecting the interest of the state they represent. The Senate was never meant to be a responsive body like the House of Representatives. Finegold's Amendment would further reduce the power of the state by stripping governor's authority to appoint vacancies in the Senate by mandating an State-wide election to fill Senate vacancies. In conclusion, Will encourages the defeat of Finegold's proposed amendment. Dismissing it as just a liberal ploy to centralize power for the Federal government by weaken the powers of state government to appoint senators.

Well this has been bothering me and I don’t want to sound like I’m ranting but dose it not seem wrong that president Obama gave congress only ten hours to read more than a thousand page bill and vote on it. Now I’m thinking if someone did that to me, no matter who they are or how powerful they are you need to stand your ground and say hey we need more time to decipher this bill. But its Not all Obama’s fault it also has to do with those weak backbones in congress. The whole country is in a panic and when the pressure’s on these congressman made a choice for votes. But anyway, this stimulus sounds great but! Where is he getting this money? Come to think of it the government does not own any money, its all from our taxes but our money in taxes are to go toward national defense “military” and country security “police law enforcement”. but now WE! are paying for those people who don’t pay taxes or there loans and live off the government tit or the stimulus plan its just wasting money. Witch bring me to my question is who allows these banks and loan agencies to give these loans away , I had to jump threw hoops to get my car loan not to mention pay 1/4th up front. So what the deal.

It was written to enlightening people on how some people want to change the Constitution. McCain-Feingold want to change how the Senate is elected. The audience of the article are all those who want to know more about what McCain-Feingold want to do with the 17th Amendment to the constitution.
The basic argument of the article is that they feel the people should be more involved in electing them rather than the legislature. I feel that it is a good argument, in allowing the voters to make the choice rather than the legislatures. It would keep the checks and balances system in tact. Feingold wants Senates to be elected every two years instead of six years. He feels that this will be more responsive to the people. I do not agree with the analogy about the first amendment: “Congress shall make no law ... abridging the freedom of speech unless it really, really wants to in order to guarantee that there will be only as much speech about the government as the government considers appropriate, and at times the government approves.” That has nothing do do with the argument being made. McCain-Feingold just want to get the people more involved and eliminate alliances.

In the article "States and Cities in Scramble for Stimulus Cash" by Monica Davey for the New York Times gives the reader a moderately detailed glimpse of information regarding what some states may or may not do with funds from the recently passed Stimulus Bill. The article is an informative one published for anyone who wants to get a better understanding of how things may or may not shape up with the spreading of these funds from state to state. May or may not is a pretty relevant phrase because at this stage in the game and as reflected in the article it is anyone's guess as to how this whole thing is going to shape up. When reading this article the reader kind of gets a view of how truly complicated the spreading of funds-what amount goes where and for what-will be. It also touches on how our great (cough) competent (cough cough) Gov. Mark Sanford says he will not take any money.. but I read somewhere else I think an article from the Associated Press that he changed his mind. Regardless, just because of the fact that he at one time or still does refuse any stimulus money shows he is.. hard-headed. My criticism is not just because of the fact that he and I are on different political ideologies that are light-years away from one another; but if your state needs help and of all people the GOVERNOR refuses that help for some reason I'm sure only he understands is just RIDICULOUS. But all-in-all I enjoyed reading this article. It just shows the future of this country is going to be very interesting.
Assignment #4 - N.Dixon
After reading the article "States and Cities in Scramble for Stimulus Cash", by Monica Davey, from the NYTimes, I feel the same as I have since I heard about the bill being passed. We are bailing out all the ones who were irresponsible and got us in this mess in the first place, and making it harder for the ones who work their butt off to pay the bills. If your behind on your house payment here's a check, if you have 15 kids here's a check. It seems ridiculous to me. Every state has it's own ideas of how they are going to spend their money, while SC officials are choosing to not take any. I do not think that our mayor has made any wonderful decisions so far, however I still raise the question "Is it really a good idea to put the country in more debt, to get us out of debt?" I'm not so sure. If we just keep bailing everyone out they are never going to learn their lesson.

Monica Davey of the New York Times wrote the article, States and Cities in Scramble for Stimulus Cash. The article is centered toward an audience that is aware and interested in the financial "black hole" that America is currently in. The article goes on to talk about the hotly debated stimulus package that President Obama has suggested. The package is suppose to divide money between the states and help start up projects which n return will create jobs. There are some people who see this plan as the life rft we need and others see it as a hole added to our already sinking life raft... The article tries to explain that there are going to be arguments of how and where the money should be spent. States will be fighting with states, cities with cities and so on. There is alot of discussion about this package, some good some bad but the truth is that we will never know how it is going to go until we give it a try. It could be good, it could be bad, I guess we will find out in the future.
Assignment #4 S.Nelson
The article States and Cities Scramble for Stimulus Cash was published on February 16, 2009 in the New York Times. The author was Monica Davey. In this article Monica talks about the projects that will come from the stimulus package as well as the jobs that will be created. Although everyone wants the money it is already becoming a problem for states trying to figure out how the money will be delegated. The problem is how much money will each state get and then how much will the states give to the local governments. It all depends on what budgets the states have and what resources they have. With $787 billion dollars there shouldn't be a problem. I am not sure that this stimulus is going to get us out of the whole that we are in. Maybe another package in the future will get us on our feet. It seems to me that the roads and bridges might be able to wait. I think we should worry about putting food on the table and getting health care to those who desperately need it. I understand the construction will make jobs but what will happen when these projects are completed? Any help is great but I hope that our state and local leaders can really see what the people need.
Assignment #4
The article entitled: States and cities Scramble for Stimulus Cash, first appeared in the New York Times and was written by Monica Davey. In the item the author goes into detail about how President Obamas stimulus package is aimed at solving Americas economic crisis while inadvertantly creating a slew of problems for state officials about how the money is to be allocated. But now the billion dollar question is, will it work? Can the stimulus package revitalize
the economy? Local officials have big grand short term plans for road construction and bridge repair, basically creating work for those who already have jobs. But what happens when those jobs are completed? Is everyone laid off again ? Is the government going to pump another 800 billion into the economy. Last week Stocks ended lower again, its lowest since last November, in short the markets haven't been stimulated by the new bill. I think Michelle Obama is the only one stimulated by Obamas big plan.

Assignment 4 C. Slough
On February 16th, 2009 Monica Davey of the New York Times wrote the article “States and Cities in Scramble for Stimulus Cash”. Other contributors to this article were Robbie Brown, Michael Cooper, David M. Herszenhorn and Robert Pear.
The purpose of the article was to show Americans how many states are receiving money and how the money from the stimulus bill will be used in their states either for major infrastructure projects, education, or Medicaid. In Missouri, most of the money they receive, about $510 million, will go towards 34 transportation projects and in the process will create 14,000 jobs. Gov. Mark Sanford of South Carolina thinks the stimulus bill is a bad idea and he says he doesn’t even want it. Rhode Island might lose out when it comes to alternative energy because it had fewer resources already dedicated to areas like wind power. Arkansas and North Carolina don’t have education issues, but are concerned that they might receive less money than other states. Minnesota was going to revise its budget to reduce the number of residents eligible for state health care programs as a way to close a deficit. But under the stimulus plan, if cuts were already made, they could jeopardize anyone eligible for Medicaid because the bill penalizes states that change their policy to save money.
In conclusion, the argument being referenced is that every state has a different reason for using the money in which they receive from the package. But every state seems to be more worried about how much the other state receives. That shouldn’t matter. If a state needs more money because it needs more help in revising itself so be it. But if a state doesn’t need a large amount of money then they shouldn’t receive it. Also, I don’t understand why the governors don’t want the money. How are they going to create jobs? How are they going to rebuild aging infrastructure? How are they going to create more efficient energy sources because coal and oil sources are basically going out the door? It seems that the governors that don’t want the money want to go back to the horse and buggy while other governors want to move forward into the future.

Assignment # 4 A. Huddleston
The Stimulus Package has been an issue of hot debate. Ever since President Obama passed a little over a week ago it has been a buzz in the media. On February 15, 2009 in the New York Times there was another article about the Stimulus Package. Monica Davey wrote the article "States and Cities Angle for Stimulus Cash." This article is about the Stimulus Package and how state, cities, and towns are running to get the money.
It is like kids in a candy store when states, towns, and cities, look at the money they might be getting. Missouri has not even had the money in hand, and are already wanting to spend 510 million dollars of the money. They have 34 transportation projects planned, but on the other hand it is going to give 14,000 jobs to people who need it. A lot of stats are needing this money and already have plans for the money. It is almost all the states have went and sat on Santa's lap and have told him what they want or have wished for.
The author has also made it known that there is a great debate on how the money is being handed down to the states. Some fights have almost broken out between different mayors. This would be due to how the money might be divided out in that state. While most states are racing to the money; some states are lying back. South Carolina is one of those states; the governor feels that this Stimulus is dirty money. That this Stimulus is somewhat of a quick fix but will end up just prolonging the problems.
The audience the author is trying to project to would be the cities and towns that the Stimulus is going to reach. She is just trying to tell them that help is on the way. It just might take a while due to fighting over the money and how it might be divided up. I hope this package does help our country and the situation that it is in. We definitely need to be pulled out before we go back into a Great Depression. Lastly, the states need to invest this money wisely and just not let it go to waste.

Assignment #3 M.Gardner
Published on February 4th, 2009 is a article dealing with the well talked about Stimulus Plan. The article “Trade-offs in the Stimulus Package” is written by Madison Powers. Madison Powers a CQ guest columnist who publishes for the QC Politics. Powers is a research scholar at Kennedy Institute of Ethics in Georgetown University.
A lot of Americans have constantly heard about the Stimulus Package being put together. Many Americans are for or against the Stimulus Package. However, Powers is gearing this article to those for and against the Stimulus Package. The article can help explain those who do not know much about the Stimulus Package understand. This article is directed more toward the working and middle class citizens. Powers tries to explain how the package is supposed to work. In the article it shows where the money could be going to. The package will affect certain areas such as unemployment, food stamps, and aid to the already hurting state and local governments. This day in time many families are fighting as hard as they can to save their house, cars, and feed their families. Within this package it will help more people get food stamps to feed their families. With the job loss so high this package will help people actually live and survive until they find a job or can get more hours. Powers would like the package to help those in desperate need. Those in need aren’t those making big bonus checks that are more than some people make in their life! People will continue to worry if the package will work and where all the money is going to. This is not some small loan for a car or house this is billions of dollars. If the problems are not fixed they will just keep growing and America might not get out of this huge problem.
I personally believe in the package long as its going to those who need it to live. Not keep their huge bonuses coming. Come on now people we are talking about millions of jobs lost this year something needs to be done.

Assignment #4 M.Gardner
The article, States and Cities in Scramble for Stimulus Cash, has many authors. The main author of the article is Monica Davey. The other contributors to the article are Robbie Brown, Michael Cooper, David M. Herszenhorn, and Robert Pear. Monica Davey is a columnist for the newspaper New York Times. On February 16th, 2009 this article appeared in the U.S section of the paper.
This article was written to show not only are Americans worried about money, so are the states. The author explained how states are trying to get their money. One major conflict with the states is where to spend their portion of the money from the stimulus bill. Some states have already decided where to use their money. There are major areas for the money to go to such as Medicaid, education, and infrastructure projects. Some states such as North Carolina have not suffered a major cut back with their education budget; however, they still want to receive money for enhancing their education. Some states believe money from the plan is going into areas that don’t necessary need it the most. For example, Massachusetts believes the Turnpike is getting to much money instead of other projects. Many states are wondering how the money from the plan will go over with all the problems that need to be fixed. However, South Carolina does not even want to take the plan! Governor Mark Sanford for South Carolina does not even want to take the plan because it’s not the best idea. States will have a say into where to spend their money but Washington will have the last in put on spending the money. How much money each state can have depends on how advanced the state is. The stimulus plan has set uproar with many people. The stimulus plan will cause political battles. Overall, people for or against the stimulus can understand the main argument the authors are trying to make. The main argument is how states, counties and other governments feel about the stimulus plan and how its money should be used and divided. This article is directed toward to those against and for the plan. The author is trying to make it understandable where the money is going to and how not only are the people worried so are the states. This is the biggest influx of federal dollars since President Lyndon B. Johnson.
I personally did not know anything about the stimulus plan when it was first mentioned. I believe in desperate needs calls for desperate actions. I believe the stimulus plan should be used in the best way possible. With all the jobs lost last year which was the highest since World War II something needs to be done. Some states are in worse conditions than others. Every state should take advantage of the money and help bring America back on good standing. Taking the stimulus plan does not mean America will be fixed fast. This plan will help hold over America until it has healed its self. I think its crazy how South Carolina does not want to take the money. If South Carolina and other states don’t take the money how will it rebuild its self? The more time goes on the more people lose their jobs, houses, and cars. What else needs to be lost before some major action is taken?

The article was written to show how the states are trying to get money form the stimulus package. Many states are worried about getting their money. Rhode Island for instance does not have a good renewable energy program but still hope to receive money for their program. Arkansas and North Carolina have not had big educational budget problems, but they still want the money to enhance their education. Massachusetts feels that too much of the money is going to go towards the Turnpike instead of other road and bridges projects. Lastly, the state of South Carolina does not even want it, because Mark Sanford thinks it is a bad idea.
The main argument of the article is to point out how states through out the country feel about how the money should be divided and used. I personally think that whatever money the states get they should use it for the best interest for their state. They should not worry about what other states are getting. Some states are worse than others so they should receive more of the money. I think that this plan will work, and start more jobs for people. I just think it will take a year or two to come into full effects.

Assignment 3 D. Haun
The article Trade-Offs in the stimulus packages written by Madison Powers-a CQ guest columnist- wrote an article in the CQ Today online news. The article concerns the stimulus package and it's potential effect on America. The bulk of the article reflects on the state of our economy and the package that will hopefully help our ailing economy. The article too discusses several ways to help the economy and America and the positives and negatives of each. The article is surely for the American reader. To educate them. Which is good. I cannot say whether I agree or disagree with the article itself because I don't know enough about economics to make any kind of judgement. And I don't have the slightest idea as to what should or should not be done about the economy. So I want to thank this author and this class for showing me this so I can now research his.
Assignment #3
The article entitled: Trade-Offs in the Stimulus Package first appeared in CQ Politics on February 4, 2009. The item was written by Madison Powers. The item was written to inform and warn Americans about the economic stimulus package proposed by the Obama Administration. Unfortunately, for too long Americans have been of the mind-set that "bigger is better." We demand the most for our dollar and we will not compromise. And there are those in Washington who insist on squeezing every single item of immediate importance or not into the package. It seems everyone has their arm out and tin cup in hand saying..gimme gimme more.
The stimulus package is also being dangled like a pork chop under the noses of those suffering because of the weakend economy. Night after night, senator after senator stand in front of the
cameras and congradulate one another for the wonderful job they have done for the American people...Oh the sacrifices they have made for us. Not only have we saved Wall Street but we threw something in for you all too...like extended unemployment benefits and dont worry about finding a job, we made it easier to get food stamps. Under the Bush Administration we pumped billions into the banking system at tax payers expense to supposedly free up credit and lending but this has not worked on any level. I honestly hope the proposed stimulus package gives the economy a much needed boost, but I also honestly believe the men and women surrounded by the Washington bubble have lost touch with the hardships faced by so many Americans.

Assignment #3 S.Nelson
The article Trade-Offs in the Stimulus Package, was published in CQ Today Online News. The article was published in February 4, 2009. The author was Madison Powers, who is a guest columnist. I think that this article was wrote for all Americans, mainly the poor and middle class. They will be the ones who benefit from this stimulus package the most. Powers says that there are two trade offs that are of special significance. One is between goals of efficiency and ideals of equity and the other is the need to strike a balance between infrastructure and other activities that also stimulate economic growth. Everyone has their own ideas of what is going to help our economy and our citizens don't really care how it gets done as long as they get the help that they need. Our country needs better unemployment benefits, families need food stamps, and people need health care. As Powers says " the multiple dimensions of the problems that we face may require us to think small and act in hundreds or even thousands of undramatic ways." We must take care of the little things before the big picture can piece itself together.
Kwesley assignment#3
Trade-Offs in the stimulus Package is an article authored by Madison Powers, a Congressional Quarterly guest columnist. The Article appears in Congressional Quarterly online news. Powers seeks to frame the debate and purpose of the economic stimulus package around two main factors..
Powers ague's that there are two factors that should be heavily considered in the debate of the economic stimulus and how resources should be appropriated. The first factor being efficiency and equity. The resources used in the stimulus must be targeted to created the most economic growth possible and it must be distributed in programs to the one's need of aid, such programs being Food Stamps and Unemployment Insurance. Putting money or resources in the hands of the one's who most needed it and who will spent it will generate a net gain for the economy.Programs like food stamps and unemployment insurance will generated $1.50 or $1.75 of return for every dollar invested.as opposed to cutting taxes which is estimated to only generate $.30 or $.50 cents for every dollar invested. The Second factor Power's focuses on is that infrastructure spending alone is not the and all and be all to our economic crisis. Powers argues that significant amounts of resources must be used to help states balance their budgets and maintain needed public services such as: law enforcement, education.fire departments etc. Aid to the states along with other government programs can generated the same if not more stimulus to the economy than infrastructure itself. Not addressing the financial crisis of the states will undoubtedly worsen already a weaken economy. Power's concludes that we need to put aside political ideology and rhetoric. Then, come to the consensus that any effective stimulus package must contain these two factors if where are going to stop the downward economic spiral.

Assignment # 3 A. Huddleston
The article "Trade-offs in the Stimulus Package" appeared in CQ Politics. It was posted on February 4, 2009 at 3:53 am using the CQ Today Online News. The author was guest columnist Madison Powers. His article focused on the Stimulus Package and some of the benefits, advances, and reserves that some have about it.
This article is directed more toward the working and middle class citizens. It is helping them understand more about the Stimulus Package and how it is supposed to work. The article tells hows the package is going to benefit them in certain programs like unemployment, food stamps, and government. The Stimulus Package is going to put money back into unemployment, and help extend some of their benefits. Also, it will increase the availability of food stamps; meaning that more Americans will be able to get food stamps.
Both of the programs help working and the middle class because of the economy being down it will give these classes a fighting chance. It will allow them to live week to week until they are able to find work or until their salaries come back up. Right now for everyone in America Darwin's theory is really coming to life. it truly is survival of the fittest. If you don't fight then you don't live. Also the package will help some what bail out local governments. Hoping this helps those classes because state and local governments would invest in more things that would bring more jobs to the area.
The author also wants to see the small people survive. A lot of people have reserves about how the money is going to be spent. They are worried about money going to much bigger programs than whee it needs to go. The author said it right when he said we need to fix the cracks because if we fixed the smaller cracks then they would not turn it to giant holes. The author just wants to make sure the audience knows where the money is going, and that it is going to be equal.
The author argument is clear. Just as he; I ; want to know where the money is going and making sure it is going to benefit the right people and the right programs. If the money just went to huge programs and businesses then we would not be able to make it, and go into another depression just as the 1930's. Hopefully this package will do what it is supposed to and stimulate the economy. Then we can try to pick up ourselves out of this rut we are in, and get back to living free and unpressed with gloom and doom.

The article, Trade-Offs in the Stimulus Package, Was wriiten by Madison Powers of the CQ Politics. The article talks about the possible help that will come from the stimulus plan the government is currently debating on. You have some politicians that are against the plan and some that are totally for it. This plan is supposedly going to help the government get America's economy out of the slums and back to where it should. Madison powers explained how the plan would work or how it is planned to work. I for one am not sure that the plan will work but I feel that we need to try something new and we need to try it soon because what America is doing and has been doing for a while noe is not working.
Assignment #3 C.Slough
This article was written on February 4th, 2009 by Madison Powers who is the CQ Guest Columnist. The article is explaining what the stimulus plan is for and its importance to the people of the United States. The main purpose for the plan is to rejuvenate the countries failing economy with hopes of a more positive effect for the future. It may take awhile for the effects of the plan to show. The article did not explain what the money will go for, but it did mention something about large infrastructure projects. I did some research on the web and watched CNN most mornings before writing this blog. The 789 billion dollars will go for aid to the poor and unemployed, taxes, education/ state fiscal relief, and energy/ science programs. Hopefully this bill passes congress and the senate because this seems to be a do or die situation for our country.

In the article “Government has to make choices families and businesses don’t” by Cindi Scoppee, that was in The State newspaper outline the difficulty the government faces in deciding what policies the government should use to help the economy. The author very skillfully plays devils advicet be give one point of view and then explains the other side of the issue. Like the benefits of taxes cut for individuals and the loss of income to the government.
This article was directed to people who have not read the news, watch, or hear the news in the past week and a half. To tell people what kind of hard decisions that the government has to make to get our countries economy back on the right track. Also the decisions the government makes affect everyone not just a small group of people in one isolated place.

Assignment #3 B. Hall
This article was written by Madison Powers who is the CQ Guest Columnist. The article was written on Feburary 4, 2009 to show the tradeoffs of the stimulus plan. This article was written to help the people get a better understanding of the stimulus plan and what the purpose of this stimulus plan is for. This money is wanted so that the government will get back on its feet and things will get better for families in America. This money will not mkae a huge difference at first, but over time the money will start to show a posotive effect on the economy. This article was a biased informative article. Madison did not really say if he/she thought the stimulus plan was a good or bad idea, he/she simply gave the facts. Hopefully we get the stimulus plan we requested for and the economy will get back on its feet soon.
B.Hall assignment #2
This article was written January 22, 2009 by Cindy Scoppe who is the Associate Editor of the State Newspaper. Scoppe is writing about the government and the economic struggle and downfall we are in. The basic arguement that Scoppe is trying to make is that the governments main purpose is to look out for society and common good. They are trying to do their best to help everyone. I think the government should look at where they are cutting some of the money because alot of people are taking advantage of the economy being down, such as applying for food stamps. Many families are able to get these food stamps due to job loss. Some families do however need this extra help, but there are those families who are using this to their advantage. I think Scoppe is trying to say that everyone needs to calm down and be paitent, that the government is trying to do the best they can to help the economy. It will all get better in time. Hopefully the government will make the right decisions to get us out of this downfall, get people their jobs back and get everybody back on their feet.

This item was written by Madison Powers who is a Senior Research Scholar, at the Kennedy Institute of Ethics. He writes for CQ Politics, which is an online source for news and politics. His article was published on February 4th, 2009.
The article was written to show the trade-offs of the stimulus plan. It was aimed toward the people that do not really know much about the plan. I am one of them. Before I read this I really did not know what the money was going to be used for. I now have more understanding of what it is going towards. First, it is going to efficiency and ideals of equity. Then, the other part of it is going towards the balance between infrastructure and other activities that will jump start the economy. Basically the money is being used to boost back up the economy back to what it used to be. It is about time that some thing is happening to fix the economy. I feel that all this money will benefit the whole nation. I do not think it will fix it immediately, but it will have a significant positive effect.
The basic argument of the author was to share what the trade offs are. Madison really did not go either way. Instead argued for both parts of the trade-offs. It is going to take a lot to fix the economy, but the stimulus plan is a great start.

The article, Government has to make choices families, businesses don't, was written by the associate editor of the state newspaper, Cindi Ross Scoppe. I think this article tries to give different analogies about how the government is always compared with families and businesses. This article is directed mainly towards the working people. The argument of the article is that we should not cut more jobs just to have more money, when it would be more productive for more people to have less money than not have any at all. I think that if everyone was to take a pay cut in order for there to be more workers there would be more opportunities for the economy to get better. More workers mean more people to pay taxes. But that also means that if you cut pay for some people it will cause them to not be able to pay the bills. In saying that, the government has a huge task ahead of them and I hope that they will be able to pull our economy out of this hole we've put ourselves in.
Assignment #2
The article: Government has to make choices families, businesses don't first appeared in The State. The article was written by Associate Editor Cindi Ross Scoppe. The article was written
to inform South Carolina citizens about the many budgetary shortfalls facing the state and the
country. The author uses analogies and bad ones at that to describe how complicated the situation is we are all in. What the author fails to realize is that analogies are not necessary. The factory worker who has just lost his job doesnt need to be told in layman terms about the harsh
realty he is about to face. The families that lost their homes do not need to look up the word homeless in the dictionary, they know the reality they are about to face. Like many and most,
Ms. Scoppe posses many questions and offers no answers. The financial disaster we are all facing
is not 100% big governments fault. We are all at fault, we allow companies to move overseas to seek out cheap labor and continue to purchase their products. Americans purchased homes they
could never afford. We elected a president who had down-syndrome, not once but twice.
We allowed our soldiers to be put in harms way unnecessarily.......but we did have enough wisdom to send Sarah Palin back to govern over the moose population in Alaska.
Welcome to America, our main export is debt.

Assignment #2 S.Nelson
This article was wrote on January 22, 2009 and appeared in the State Newspaper. The author is Cindy Scoppe, who is the Associate Editor. Her first statement is so true. Government spending is always compared to families or businesses. It is hard to compare the two. Our government is working on ways to help the everyday family. Right now the issue is all of the Americans that are losing their jobs are expected to go out and spend to help our economy. It is hard to accomplish that when you have to pay the mortgage or the power bill. In the article Cindy does mention the choices that our government faces, is it better to raise taxes or lower taxes, and is it better for more people to have less money or less people to have more money. I know that the company that I work for a put a salary freeze in effect so that no more jobs have to be cut during these hard times. Some employees are upset but knowing that the person beside me has a job is OK with me. This article is intended for everyone. With the unknown ahead it is important that we all stay up to date on current events. If they take money from our school that will affect our children, if we lose our jobs that will affect us and our families. It will take some time but hopefully our government will realize what is important and take other steps to get our spending on track.
Assignment # 2 A. Huddleston
The newspaper article first appeared on Thursday January 22, 2009. Into the State of South Carolina's paper and was posted on line at the website TheState.com. The Associate Editor Cindi Ross Scoppe was the author of this article. This article focused on how South Carolina's budget is sinking into debt and how it is being handled.
The author talks about how families and businesses do not have to make the same decisions with their money as the government does. The author is very concerned about the government and how people look at it. The author would like to see a cut in taxes; this would put more people back to work. This would work by putting more money back into people and employer's hands; creating more money for businesses to pay their employees. The author then thinks that there should not be anymore pay increases because then it would keep the businesses in business longer.
The author is very confusing when writing this article; because sometimes it seems that she is leaning to the left. Then sometimes it seems she is leaning to the right. It seems though she is trying to write to a neutral audience because she is right there are no easy answers out there. Either way South Carolina seems to way out there problems it is going to effect one group or the other. Whether it is to cut state funded programs to help those unemployed, or to raise taxes to help state spending and putting those into debt. No matter which way we look at it the author is right your not going to be able to help or please everyone. If we all ran to the banks and take out our money; we might bot have a cushion for later use. Just like if we tap into the reserve funds how we might not be able to invest any money in for future jobs that might come to South Carolina. Anyway we look at our economy it was almost doomed to happen like this. We should have been investing in more things like education, more valuable jobs; like technology infused; and better valuable skills. South Carolina is focused around textile mills and manufacturing. Which almost all the textile and manufacturing mills are shut down due to companies finding better deals overseas. Since South Carolina is so past due it really makes the economy suffer.
Reading this article really put it all into perspective about our economy. Somethings should have changed overtime and, somethings should change in time. South Carolina is in desperate need of funding. When they are about to cut money for education you know we have hit rock bottom. In my opinion if the governor does not want to take the stimulus check from government; then he should have put some of his millions to help out this state he loves so much. Just like the Bank of America owners. Just as the author said there are not right answers, but a lot of changes could have been made to divide the money up to help both sides. Just as they should not raise taxes; they should not have cut services. Just like in the Herald yesterday the state was cutting hospice money. I feel that is totally wrong because sometimes that is someones last chance at life in which they want to live; and their families want to be with them. If the state wants to cut some money they should then take a real look at some of these people cheating welfare and food stamps against those who really need it and can't get it. In my opinion there are things that can be done and should be done to prevent the downfall of South Carolina. You can't please everyone so trying the ones there are the most of and that is the working class.

Government Has To Make Choices Families,Business Don't is an article authored by Cindi Ross Scoppe, the associated editor for the State newpaper. This article appears in the State newspaper. Scoppe author's the article to inform the public that there is no silver bullet or magic solution to the current economic crisis effect on state government.
Scoppe argues that there are no easy answer to how state government deal with budget issues. Some hold the opinion that government can operate just like families and business in dealings with their respective budgets. This could not be further from reality. When it comes to the case of government such thinking is not so simplistic.. Families and business can relatively make financial adjustment more easily and with less consequences than government. Reasoning being is that government has the responsibility of insuring the public interest. As opposed to Families that pursue personal interest and business that pursue the private interest. Government has to weigh it effect on such persons that are most dependent upon it: services. This being children and young adults. For example, services such as:head start, Medicaid, Food Stamps are all programs that benefit low income children . State funded tuition helps young adults with the high cost of getting an education, which is imperative to compete in a global economy. However, cutting such programs may be necessary to meet the constitutional requirement of a balanced budget. Raising taxes is a possibility, but it is politically unpopular therefore unlikely. This economic crisis has put states in difficult predicament. Scoppe concludes that since there aren't any easy solutions therefore there will be a negative outcome of someone will get "the short end of the stick"

Assignment # 2 M. Gardner
The State newspaper held an article written by Cindi Ross Scoppe which was published January 22, 2009. This article was published in the Opinion section of the paper. The title of the article is “Government has to make choices families, businesses don’t.” The first opinion that popped into my head about this article was the tough and major changing decisions that the government of America has to make. When the government makes decisions it affects everyone. No matter what decisions are made everyone cannot be pleased. It would be a miracle if things could be done to where everyone is happy.
With this American downfall its hard which decisions to make. Is it better for families or business? How come when fewer people have more money they turn around and lay people off? The more people have less money there is less or no layoffs. There is not just one solution to helping our economic rise up. Like in the Great Depression many people will suffer great losses such as their jobs, cars, and houses. Families think about whets right for their family just as spending money in certain areas and saving as much money as they can. Business have to think about we are losing money when need to lay more people off to cover the lost. However, if the government thought like the families and business do America would be in more trouble than it is now!
All those people who blame the government for the economic down fall and all the wrong decisions are the audience of this article. The author is trying to point out there is not right way to handle this major problem that everyone agrees upon. It’s better to give then to receive and the government cannot give everyone what they want there is not the time nor the money. Americans need to understand there is not one solution that will help everyone. America is one nation and the Americans need to come together and be like a nation and help America rebuild all together. No matter what decisions are made by the government someone is going to get hurt. Let’s hope it’s not the lower classes that get hurt more than they are ready do!! Overall, the author is stating her opinions and showing how she believes in our government. She believes just as much as I do that the government will figure something out and help America out of this economic downfall.

Cindi Ross Scoppe, an associate editor, for The State Newspaper, writes this article. The article was posted the day after Election Day, Jan. 22,2009. The title says it all, “Scoppe: Government has to make choices families, businesses don’t,” a well-written fact, which was ironically posted in the “opinion section” of the newspaper.
Scoppe’s argument simply states that the government has some tough decisions to make. The ultimate responsibility of the economy is lying in their hands. We can scream our opinions all day long, but the fact of the matter is the choice is left with the government.
Either way it goes someone is going to get hurt, the question is “who will it be?” No matter what the government decides to do, they cannot and will not satisfy everyone. However, I think it’s extremely important that all the options are way, and that the outcome favors the majority, not the wealthy!

This article was written by Cindi Ross Scoppe, an associate editor with The State newspaper. This paper is published in Columbia and is read throughout the entire state, also found on the world wide web to all. The article was published January 22, 2009, in the Opinion section of the paper.
I feel that the article was written to try to help explain the tough decisions that our government has to make. I did not realize how many things they have to consider with even the smallest choices made. The government effects the lives of so many. Its hard to make every body in our nation happy with out causing harm to others. Like Ms. Scoppe points out, "Is it better for fewer people to have more money (give out pay raises, while laying off employees) or for more people to have less money (no layoffs, but wholesale furloughs)?" Along with many other tough choices there is no one solution to the economic downfall. Many people will struggle through this time. Its true that business and families just have to meet their own needs and not really worry about how it effects others, but our government can not think like that.
The audience it is written towards is those who blame the government for making wrong decisions. As this article points out, there is clearly no solution that will help everyone and hurt no one. We as a nation just need to pull together and help one another out as much as possible. The author is making the point that she believes in our government and that some how some way it will make the right choice and we will prevail in the long run.

The colomn,"Radical In The White House", was written by a journalist by the name of Thomas L. Friedman. He is a three time Pulitzer Prize winner and author. He published this article in the New York Times after the inauguration of President Barack Obama, in the hopes that Americans will see that the old way of doing things is getting us no where and now with the change of president we can make some changes as a country.
I think that this article was directed towards the American people as a whole, but mostly to the youth. This is the generation that is going to be able to make a difference, we as the youth have the ability to educate ourselves with what is going on in our country and fight for the changes we will need to take place. And i just also hope that the American people voted for Obama for the right reasons not because of race or to make history but because they truley want to see a change in our country, that they would like to see their children grow up country that takes pride in itself once again.

Assignment #1 D, Haun
The article entitled 'Radical in the White House" by Thomas L. Friedman for The New York Times and is about the recent election and inauguration of the 43rd president Barack Obama. This was definitely an informative commentate article. He writes about how times have changed in America when for the first time ever a black man has been elected president of the United States. The article also discusses the current state of the Union and how it is one of extreme problems and potentially extreme solutions and how it is going to take a president capable of taking extreme measures to fix things. Mr. Friedman states that he hopes that President Obama is a closet radical because radical action is need to fix Americas dire problems. The author also says these big problems often spawn big solutions; solutions that often turn things upside down but in big positive ways. The author feels our current president has massive potential and how Obama cannot waste any time with his presidency but only time will tell what he will do and how he will do overall.
Assignment 1 JR TRIPP
Thomas L. Friedman of the New York Times wrote an article about the recently elected president Barack Obama. He established America has finally put race, gender and status aside somewhat with the electing of Barack Obama. Friedman feels that in this time of need we need a radical leader to get us out of the hole that the nation is in and he feels that Barck is the man to do such a job.
After 8 years as president bush there is alot of work to do to get America on a good foundation. He also lets the readers know that the voting public is hopeful and trustful that Barack will get the job done. It took a long time for us to break the mold of presidents but we finally did it. Hopefully we can break the "DEBT" mold that we have been in for a while. Even for the voters who didn't vote for Barack, they should hope he does the best he can do because times are so bad that it might take a few crazy moves to get us out of this mess.

In the New York Times on January 21, 2009 the article “Radical in the White House” was published. This article was only published one day after the inauguration of Americas first African-American President. The author of the article is Thomas L. Friedman. Thomas Friedman is known for certain things like being in charge of the Foreign-affairs for the New York Times. At one point Friedman was the chief White House correspondent. Therefore, Friedman is not new to America and knows its background very well.
This article was not just about the inauguration of Barack Obama the first African-American President. Obama became President in a crucial time in America. Friedman writes about how past Presidents and their mistakes or downfalls. Friedman made sure not talk down on the mistakes or downfalls of other Presidents. Friedman expresses his feelings about having our first African-American President. In the article the feelings are expressed about how American is in a crucial time and if Obama can keep his goals and turn America around.
In the article the author is gearing toward America youth right now. With all the “changes” that needs to be made to help pull America out of this crucial time those changes will have the biggest impact on the youth. All though some older Americans will be affected, it’s more of the future of the youth. Change needs to be made so the youth will be able to make it in their lives. The article is also geared to anyone about how changes need to be done for America. This is a rough time in America and many people haven’t see America like this in many years.
Overall, like the author expressed his feelings about hoping Obama can handle and secure all the problems in America that needs to be changed. It’s a hard position to be in at time like this. I hope just like all other Americans is that Osama can not only make history for becoming the first African-American but make history for changing America when it is in such a crucial time.

Assignment # 1 A. Huddleston
The article “Radical in the White House” was published into the New York Times on January 20, 2009. Thomas Friedman was the author who wrote this article. Thomas Friedman described a very realistic scene after the presidential inauguration.
The whole country was a roar at the sight of President Obama becoming our commander and chief. Many Americans have been waiting for this day. The day America showed that its racial issues aside, and worked together to put America's priorities first. This past election showed how far America has come; that we can elect someone we believe in rather than the Good Ole' Boy System!
This article also described how hard some of our nation's finest political figures to prepare us for this moment. Mr. Friedman did a great job of not bashing our former President. He described President Bush's downfalls, and has put all his beliefs in President Obama's slogans of hope and change. As every American we are hoping and praying Mr. Obama can turn our nation around from the mess that we are currently in.
The mood of this article was geared to America as a whole. Not only for America but it was geared toward more of our nation's youth. America's youth is really the next generation. Anything that Obama does not only effects America, but it effects our youth and their future. Mr. Friedman was saying that it is up to the President to help our youth, and the future of the Untied States that they are going to live in. Just as Obama; Mr. Friedman is hoping and wanting a change in our nation. All of America is wanting hope and change.
President Obama has now made American History. He will be forever known, and will be talked about as long as humans exist. Lets just hope the conversations that are being held will also be known in history for good. Just hope us as Americans just did not vote for him to make history, but to save us from going down an even more narrow path. The country's thoughts and wishes are with President Obama!

Radical in the White House
I enjoyed reading this article entitled "Radical in the White House" it was executed well. I agree completely with the views of the author, Thomas L. Friedman. Desperate times calls for desperate measures. Everyone is rejoicing over the fact that we have begun to come together as a country and look past our racial differences. That is a great thing, however, I believe there are much greater issues at stake. We overcame one major struggle but there are many more ahead. President Obama has been selected to take on a very difficult task, we are officially in economic turmoil. Americans as a whole have put their trust in Obama and his campaign of "change". Hopefully, this to will come to pass.

The artilcle Radical in the White House, which appeared in the New York Times on January 21, 2009, was written by Thomas L. Friedman. This article was not only written in response to the Inaugaration which took place on the 20th of January, only a day before, but to help usher in the idea that President Obama is our savior in these times of great hardship and time of need.
The audience this article is catering to is every red-blooded American that is ready to see "change that we can believe in" take place.
The basic argument the author is making is that Obama is the radical man that is called upon in radical times that calls for radical measures.
In response to this article I wish President Obama the best and my hopes are with him that we as a country can overcome these depressionary times.

assignment one
In this article by Thomas Friedman, he speaks about how he is joyful our nation has elected a black man as president in which he has a lot of trust and respect for. Friedman is happy that American citizens were able to overcome the whole idea of our president being black, and do what was best for our nation. We need change and Barack Obama has promised to deliver. This gives hope to many people, people who have dreams that don't seem like they can be accomplished. Now that America has a black president, many people think now anything is possible. It brings hope to people, especially African Americans. Hopefully Obama will be able to bring everybody together as a whole and fix what our nation is going through, with our economy struggling so greatly. Obama has a lot of pressure on him as of right now, and only time will tell if he was the best elect for the president of the United States.

Assignment #1
The article entitled: Radical in the White House was written by Thomas L. Friedman and first appeared in The New York Times. In the article, Friedman expresses his concerns about the direction the country was headed while led by the Bush Administration, a administration that has done more harm to the reputation of America than any other.
America is long past due a African American President and Friedman like myself believes Barack
Obama to be the person who can bring about that much needed change, not only domestically but also when foreign affairs come into play.
Friedman is expressing his concern to all those who feel bitter and betrayed by the last eight years and too many minorities beyond that. Of course im sure the author realizes, while President Obama may be a great politician, only time will reveal how great a president he will
truly turn out to be. Let us all hope he doesnt fall prey to the corruption Washington has grown
accustomed too.

Assignment 1
This item was written Thomas L. Friedman. He was born July 20, 1953. He has won the Pulitzer Prize three awards during his brilliant career. His main focus is foreign affairs, but does many other topics as well. This article appeared in The New York Times on January 20th, 2009, in the Opinion sections of the newspaper.
The article was written to inform America on what is at stake. It told of the history that was made with a black president, and how more then ever it is time for a radical type of change. There is so many things that need to be done. It is simply amazing on how much potential Barack Obama has, but we as a nation can only hope for the best and pray he and our government make the best decisions. The audience it was more directed toward was the younger generations. We have the ability to make changes in the world today. We just need to inform ourselves and help on the ideas and changes that need to be made.
The basic argument of the author was that it is time for an enormous change. The president has the ability to do great things. This type of chance only comes so often in history. Only the greatest of presidents can do it, and the author is hopeful that Barack Obama can accomplish it. We as a nation will soon find out.
