The newspaper article first appeared on Thursday January 22, 2009. Into the State of South Carolina's paper and was posted on line at the website TheState.com. The Associate Editor Cindi Ross Scoppe was the author of this article. This article focused on how South Carolina's budget is sinking into debt and how it is being handled.
The author talks about how families and businesses do not have to make the same decisions with their money as the government does. The author is very concerned about the government and how people look at it. The author would like to see a cut in taxes; this would put more people back to work. This would work by putting more money back into people and employer's hands; creating more money for businesses to pay their employees. The author then thinks that there should not be anymore pay increases because then it would keep the businesses in business longer.
The author is very confusing when writing this article; because sometimes it seems that she is leaning to the left. Then sometimes it seems she is leaning to the right. It seems though she is trying to write to a neutral audience because she is right there are no easy answers out there. Either way South Carolina seems to way out there problems it is going to effect one group or the other. Whether it is to cut state funded programs to help those unemployed, or to raise taxes to help state spending and putting those into debt. No matter which way we look at it the author is right your not going to be able to help or please everyone. If we all ran to the banks and take out our money; we might bot have a cushion for later use. Just like if we tap into the reserve funds how we might not be able to invest any money in for future jobs that might come to South Carolina. Anyway we look at our economy it was almost doomed to happen like this. We should have been investing in more things like education, more valuable jobs; like technology infused; and better valuable skills. South Carolina is focused around textile mills and manufacturing. Which almost all the textile and manufacturing mills are shut down due to companies finding better deals overseas. Since South Carolina is so past due it really makes the economy suffer.
Reading this article really put it all into perspective about our economy. Somethings should have changed overtime and, somethings should change in time. South Carolina is in desperate need of funding. When they are about to cut money for education you know we have hit rock bottom. In my opinion if the governor does not want to take the stimulus check from government; then he should have put some of his millions to help out this state he loves so much. Just like the Bank of America owners. Just as the author said there are not right answers, but a lot of changes could have been made to divide the money up to help both sides. Just as they should not raise taxes; they should not have cut services. Just like in the Herald yesterday the state was cutting hospice money. I feel that is totally wrong because sometimes that is someones last chance at life in which they want to live; and their families want to be with them. If the state wants to cut some money they should then take a real look at some of these people cheating welfare and food stamps against those who really need it and can't get it. In my opinion there are things that can be done and should be done to prevent the downfall of South Carolina. You can't please everyone so trying the ones there are the most of and that is the working class.
